Neck pain
refers to discomfort or pain in any of the structures located in the neck region. The neck is a complex area that consists of muscles, nerves, bones (spinal vertebrae), and intervertebral discs that provide cushioning between the vertebrae. Discomfort or pain can arise from various causes and may range from mild to severe.
Causes of Neck Pain:
- Muscle Strain: This is one of the most common causes of neck pain and is often a result of poor posture, overuse of muscles, or excessive strain on the neck muscles, such as from prolonged sitting in front of a computer or carrying heavy objects.
- Cervical Disc Degeneration: The intervertebral discs in the neck can degenerate over time due to wear and tear, leading to conditions like cervical disc herniation or cervical spondylosis. These conditions can cause neck pain as well as associated symptoms like radiating pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms.
- Neck Injuries: Traumatic events such as whiplash from car accidents or sports injuries can cause strains or sprains in the neck muscles and ligaments, leading to pain and restricted neck movement.
- Nerve Compression: Conditions like cervical radiculopathy or cervical spinal stenosis can cause compression of the spinal nerves in the neck, resulting in neck pain as well as radiating pain, tingling, or numbness into the arms and hands.
- Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, or infections can also contribute to neck pain.
