Joint pain can result from various factors, including injuries that impact the ligaments, bursae, or tendons surrounding the joint. Injuries can also affect the ligaments, cartilage, and bones within the joint itself. In addition to injury, joint pain can be caused by inflammation, such as in cases of arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis), as well as infection. Rarely, joint pain can be associated with joint tumors. Pain originating from within the joint is a common cause of discomfort in areas like the shoulder, ankle, and knee. Medically, joint pain is referred to as arthralgia.
